Dr Richard Wood has a PhD in psychology in gambling studies and is the principal and founding director of wwwGamRes.org, an independent gambling research consultancy based in Canada.
Dr Wood develops and evaluates responsible gambling initiatives, such as www.gamgard.com, that supports socially responsible game design, and www.gamtalk.org that provides free online support for people with gambling related issues. He has undertaken responsible gambling consultations and research projects for more than 50 gaming companies, regulators and government organisations world-wide.
Dr Wood has spearheaded the concept of Positive Play, shifting the focus on to encouraging positive, responsible gambling beliefs and behaviors amongst players. He led the development of the Positive Play Scale – the first ever instrument to measure and optimise responsible gambling strategy.
Much of the principal focus of gambling research has been upon problem gambling and harm. But this session will focus on what can be learnt from the high percentage of gamblers who gamble safely and responsibly.
What valuable insights can be drawn from a range of gamblers to help inform preventative approaches, self-help methods, and how recreational gambling might transition to less healthy forms?
