July 2018: From 19 September 2018, changes to the Gambling Regulation Act 2003 (the Act) will come into effect that will impact on EFTPOS transactions and the operation of cheque cashing services in gaming venues.

From this date:

- EFTPOS facilities in a gaming venue must prohibit a person from obtaining more than $500 on any one debit or credit card within a 24-hour period;

-  person in a gaming venue cannot obtain cash from an EFTPOS facility unless it is operated by an employee of the venue operator; and

- the promotion and operation of cheque cashing services is prohibited in a gaming venue (including on any land that is owned or leased and any car park owned or occupied by the venue operator)..

The $200 transaction limit on EFTPOS transactions and prohibition on cash advances from a credit amount will remain in place.

In relation to the new limit on EFTPOS withdrawals within a 24-hour period, the 24-hour period is calculated as commencing from the time of the first withdrawal.

It is the responsibility of venue operators to ensure they understand their obligations under the Act and to make the necessary arrangements so they remain compliant.
